President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing the late Pontiff as a humble servant of God, a relentless advocate for the poor, and a beacon of hope for millions across the globe.
In a personally signed statement released on Easter Monday, April 21, President Tinubu paid tribute to the Pope’s life of service, highlighting his deep commitment to faith, justice, and humanity. Pope Francis died at the age of 88.
“Today, with a heavy heart, I join the Catholic faithful and Christians around the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis,” Tinubu said. “He was a tireless champion of the poor and a guiding light whose message transcended borders and touched countless lives. His passing, so soon after the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection, marks a sacred return to his Maker at a moment of renewed hope for Christians.”
Reflecting on the Pope’s papacy, which began in 2013, Tinubu noted his profound influence on global affairs.
“From the onset, Pope Francis carried a message of mercy—urging us to see Christ in the faces of the marginalized, the migrants, and the forgotten. He challenged leaders to uphold justice, called on nations to welcome the stranger, and reminded us that our planet is a sacred trust to be safeguarded for future generations.”
Tinubu described the Pontiff as an “instrument of peace,” a leader who embodied the teachings of Christ through love for God and compassion for all humanity.
“At a time of global divisions, he built bridges—between faiths, between rich and poor, and between nations. He was a tireless advocate for the developing world, speaking boldly against economic injustice and praying constantly for peace.”
The President also praised the Pope’s intellectual and spiritual contributions, noting that his encyclicals and pastoral letters were “not only doctrinally rich but also profoundly relevant—offering clarity and hope in a complex world.”
He recalled celebrating the Pope’s improving health just a day earlier during his Easter message and expressed shock at the sudden loss.
“Alas, the Lord called him home a day later. The world has lost one of its most passionate voices for justice, peace, and climate action. May the God he served so faithfully receive him into eternal rest.”
President Tinubu urged the global community to honour Pope Francis’ legacy not just with words, but with action.
“Let us honour him by lifting the downtrodden, healing our communities, and defending the dignity of every human life.”
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church, the global Catholic community, and all Christians mourning this monumental loss.”
