Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has opened up about the importance of genotype compatibility when choosing a life partner.
Speaking during a recent episode of the One54 podcast, the singer, who said he has the SS genotype, revealed that he would not have married his wife, Simi, if she had been AS or SS.
According to him, genotype testing was one of the first things he and Simi did when they met, with the test confirming that she was AA.
“I wouldn’t have married my wife if she were SS or AS. She’s AA,” he said.
Adekunle Gold stressed the importance of genotype testing before marriage and having children, noting that people living with sickle cell should not be discouraged from finding love but should understand the potential implications of having children with a partner whose genotype may be incompatible.
He urged couples to take genotype testing seriously as part of marriage and family planning.
