Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of taking oil wells belonging to Cross River State while serving as governor of Akwa Ibom State.

Amaechi made the allegation during a political town hall meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, organised to engage voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He insisted that his comments were based on historical facts rather than political rivalry with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I am not calling Akpabio out because he is in the APC. I am calling him out because he knows that I know what he did. Tell him Amaechi says Akpabio knows what he did,” he said.

Amaechi urged Cross River residents to demand an explanation from Akpabio over the alleged transfer of disputed maritime oil assets to Akwa Ibom State.

He further alleged that Akpabio had attempted to claim oil wells belonging to Rivers State during his tenure as governor but said Rivers State successfully challenged the move in court.

The former Minister of Transportation also explained why the federal railway network was not extended to Calabar during his time in office. He said an initial plan had been developed for an $11 billion coastal railway project linking Lagos to Calabar, with a spur to Obudu Cattle Ranch, but the project was stalled by funding constraints.

Amaechi also questioned the economic viability of the $16 billion coastal highway project being pursued by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, arguing that alternative infrastructure priorities should be considered.
