The Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has indefinitely suspended academic activities at its School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing following the death of a student, Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo.

The decision was announced in a notice issued on Tuesday, October 21, and signed by the Coordinator of Programme and Head of School, Dr Taiwo Omirin, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director.

The suspension affects students in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sets, including master’s student nurses and those undergoing orientation. Students residing in the school’s hostel were also directed to vacate the premises immediately.

According to the management, the decision followed reported unrest among students over Taiwo’s death and was intended to provide a peaceful environment for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The notice stated: “This decision follows the unfortunate demise of Student Nurse Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, which has reportedly resulted in student unrest within the hospital community.”

The hospital did not specify a date for the resumption of academic activities, noting that the suspension would remain in force until further notice. It appealed to students and other stakeholders to remain calm, comply with the directive and await further communication from the management. The institution also apologised for any inconvenience caused by the decision.

Taiwo, a post-basic nursing student who reportedly had asthma, died following a medical emergency at the institution. His death sparked protests by fellow students, who alleged negligence in the handling of the emergency. The allegations have yet to be established and remain subject to investigation.
