The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially joined the nationwide indefinite strike declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

On Monday, November 13, ASUU issued a directive for its members to actively participate in the strike, effective from midnight of the same day. The National President of the Union, Emmanuel Osodeke, communicated this decision through a circular addressed to ASUU’s zonal coordinators and chairpersons.

In the circular, Osodeke stated, “As an affiliate of NLC, all members of our union are hereby directed to join this action of NLC to protect the interests of Nigerian workers and the leadership of the union. Zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons should immediately mobilize our members to participate in the action.”

This move comes in response to the joint call from NLC and TUC, urging their affiliates to partake in the planned nationwide strike, scheduled to commence at midnight on Monday, November 13. The strike is a collective protest against the alleged assault on the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, purportedly carried out by the Nigerian police and the Imo State government.
