Barcelona have completed the high-profile signing of England winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, the club confirmed on Friday, May 29, in a deal reportedly worth up to €80 million ($93 million).

The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at the Camp Nou until June 30, 2031.

Gordon arrives in Catalonia following an outstanding campaign with Newcastle, where he finished as the club’s leading scorer with 17 goals across all competitions, including 10 in the Champions League. His arrival strengthens a Barcelona attack undergoing significant changes, with veteran striker Robert Lewandowski set to depart at the expiration of his contract and uncertainty surrounding Marcus Rashford’s future after the end of his loan spell from Manchester United.

Fresh from securing the La Liga title, Barcelona are operating with greater financial flexibility under the league’s financial fair play regulations. The club has benefited from reduced spending in recent seasons and increased revenue generated by the partial reopening of the renovated Camp Nou.

The departures of Lewandowski and Rashford have also created additional room on the wage bill, allowing the club to pursue further reinforcements. Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has been linked with a move to Barcelona, while a permanent deal for Rashford has not been ruled out.

Further changes to the squad are expected, with players such as Roony Bardghji, Ansu Fati, and Marc-André ter Stegen among those reportedly facing uncertain futures.

For Newcastle, Gordon’s transfer marks the second-largest sale in the club’s history, surpassed only by Alexander Isak’s £125 million ($168 million) move to Liverpool last summer.

The Magpies are already exploring replacement options, with Real Betis winger Ez Abde understood to be among their primary targets. Everton, meanwhile, stand to benefit financially from the transfer. The Merseyside club included a 15 percent sell-on clause when they sold Gordon to Newcastle for £45 million in 2023, entitling them to a share of the profit generated from his move to Barcelona.
