Nigerian media personality DJ DSF has sparked debate about parenting and financial responsibility after stating that people who cannot afford to raise children should reconsider having them.
Speaking on the My Unpopular Opinion podcast, she argued that having children without the financial means to cater to their needs places an unfair burden on the children, their families and the parents themselves.
“My unpopular opinion is broke people shouldn’t have kids. I don’t think it’s fair to the children. It’s not fair to the family. It’s not fair to yourself,” she said.
Citing her cousin, who has five children, DJ DSF questioned why someone already struggling financially would continue having more children.
“I have a cousin that has five kids, and she’s been broke since she had the first one. Why do you have five? Every other week it’s, ‘Oh, can I have money for school fees? I don’t have money to feed this one,’” she stated.
When one of the interviewers pointed out that some successful people came from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, DJ DSF questioned why parents would knowingly want their children to experience similar struggles.
“I was birthed into a struggle. Why would I want my kids to be birthed into a struggle? I had to fight. Do I want my kids to fight?” she asked.
The conversation also explored whether growing up in difficult financial circumstances builds resilience or exposes children to unnecessary hardship.
