Several people are feared dead after a bomb explosion involving a commercial bus near Woro Village in Kaiama Local Government Area.

The military said the incident occurred early on Monday, March 23, 2026, at about 7:43am, when a vehicle travelling from Wurumakoto Village to New Bussa in Niger State struck an improvised explosive device (IED).

The driver, identified as Mallam Zunairu, was said to have unknowingly driven over the device, triggering an explosion that killed him instantly. Several passengers sustained severe injuries, while others are believed to have died in the blast.

According to the military, those critically injured were taken to General Hospital New Bussa for emergency treatment, although the exact number of casualties has yet to be confirmed. Security officials suspect the device was planted by armed groups operating in the area, who may also be behind a similar attack in the Woro axis last month.

“Joint security operatives have since been deployed to the scene,” the military said, noting that during clearance operations, another explosive device was discovered and safely defused by specialists from a Nigerian Army base in Kaiama.

Authorities added that despite heightened security along the Kaiama–Woro corridor, criminal groups appear to be adopting new tactics, including the use of improvised explosive devices. The area has seen a surge in insecurity in recent weeks, with Woro Village experiencing a major attack in February that left many residents dead and others abducted.
