In Kaduna State, the Kafanchan Upper Customary Court on Tuesday, April 30, ordered the remand of a 32-year-old businessman, Raphael Moses, in prison custody for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old girl.

Presided over by Judge Michael Bawa, the court did not entertain Mr. Moses’ plea, directing instead that the case file be forwarded to the director of public prosecutions (DPP) for guidance. The case was adjourned until May 19 for further advice from the DPP. The defendant was charged with defilement by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC).

According to NSCDC prosecutor Marcus Audu, the incident was reported by the girl’s mother, Catherine Denis, at the Corp’s office in Kafanchan on April 22. Audu explained that the accused enticed the girl into his room and sexually assaulted her. Alerted by concerned neighbors, the complainant was taken to the Salama Sexual Assault Referral Centre.

Mr. Audu cited that the defendant’s actions violated section 259 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
