The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) military has successfully thwarted an attempted coup d’état, which involved both Congolese and foreign fighters. Sylvain Ekenge, spokesperson for the DRC army, announced the development in a televised address on RTNC TV, stating that the situation is now under control with several suspects detained. The intervention came after armed assailants targeted the residence of Vital Kamerhe, a former chief of staff and close associate of President Felix Tshisekedi, resulting in casualties including two police officers and one attacker. This incident unfolds against a backdrop of political tensions within the ruling party, particularly surrounding the postponement of a crucial election for the leadership of the national assembly. President Tshisekedi has been engaging with parliamentarians and party officials in efforts to resolve the crisis, following his reelection in December 2023.
