Five children have died, and one sustained injuries, after a fence collapsed in the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri, Borno State.

The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2025.

Confirming the tragedy to Punch, ASP Nahum Daso, spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, said the injured child is receiving medical treatment while investigations into the incident are ongoing.

“Yesterday, at about 8 p.m., we received a report from the Divisional Police Officer of Bulumkutu Division that a fence fell on six children. Tragically, five of them, all under the age of 16, lost their lives, while one was injured and is currently in the hospital,” he stated.

Daso added that the command has launched an immediate investigation into how the fence collapsed and whether any negligence was involved.

He also urged the public to observe proper structural standards when erecting buildings and to supervise their children closely. “We call on everyone to ensure safe construction practices and keep a close watch on their children to prevent such incidents,” he said.
