Spanish billionaire businessman Florentino Pérez has been re-elected president of Real Madrid, securing another four-year term at the helm of the Spanish giants.

The election marked a significant moment in the club’s history, as it was the first presidential contest in two decades. In previous elections, Pérez had either run unopposed or been re-elected without facing a challenger.

The result underscored the strong backing he continues to enjoy among Real Madrid members, following a tenure widely regarded as one of the most successful in the club’s history.

Although the election day was briefly overshadowed by controversy after around 400 postal votes linked to Pérez’s candidacy were invalidated over alleged irregularities in the sealing of envelopes, the issue had little effect on the final outcome.

Pérez’s victory is also expected to have immediate implications for the club’s sporting direction. During the campaign, he revealed that José Mourinho would be appointed head coach if he retained the presidency, raising expectations of the Portuguese manager’s return to the Santiago Bernabéu.

His challenger, Enrique Riquelme, had indicated that Mourinho would not be part of his plans, meaning the election result effectively settles the issue of who is likely to take charge of the team.

Opinion polls conducted throughout the voting process had consistently placed Pérez comfortably ahead, and the final results confirmed his status as the overwhelming favourite.

Since first becoming president in 2000, Pérez has played a transformative role at Real Madrid. He spearheaded the famous “Galácticos” era, bringing global stars such as Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazário and David Beckham to the club.

The strategy not only strengthened the team on the pitch but also reshaped the commercial landscape of modern football, influencing how elite clubs approach branding and player recruitment.

After stepping down in 2006 amid a period of mixed results, Pérez returned to the presidency in 2009 and oversaw an even more successful era. Under his leadership, Real Madrid won numerous domestic and international trophies, including multiple UEFA Champions League titles, cementing its status as one of the dominant forces in world football.

Beyond sporting success, Pérez has overseen major infrastructure and commercial projects, including the extensive redevelopment of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, expansion of the club’s global brand, and significant growth in revenue streams, further strengthening Real Madrid’s position both on and off the field.
