Inmate grabs warder’s rifle, shoots vulcaniser in Kwara

A vulcanizer identified as Abdullah Ayinla was struck by a stray bullet from a rifle seized by a prison inmate from a warder.

The incident took place at the Oke-Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin around 8 am while some prison inmates were being escorted out of the facility. Ayinla, who sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach, was promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention, while the errant inmate was detained at the ‘C’ Division Police station, Isale-Ojo, in the Ilorin metropolis.

The inmate, identified as Kazeem Adam, reportedly vandalized several tricycle and vehicle windscreens before attempting to seize the rifle from the prison officer, resulting in it discharging accidentally during the scuffle.

Olumide Adegbulugbe, the spokesperson of the correctional service, provided insight into the incident, stating:

“Kazeem Adam of Ita-Ogunbo, Ilorin, armed with a knife and stones, vandalized keke (tricycle) and vehicle windscreens.

“He also damaged a correctional vehicle bus with Reg No A247NC. While attempting to apprehend the suspect, one Ismail Kabir, who was on guard, along with others, was attacked.

“The suspect attempted to wrestle his rifle away and, in the process, stabbed the officer in the head and hand. During the struggle, the rifle accidentally discharged, resulting in Abdullah Ayinla of Isale Oja being hit by a bullet.”
