Jorge Messi, the father and longtime agent of football superstar Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68.
Jorge passed away on Friday night, August 7, at a medical clinic in Rosario, Argentina, following a prolonged illness, according to the family.
He had spent his final months receiving treatment between a medical facility in Rosario and his home, where he was cared for by his wife, Celia, and their children, Rodrigo, Matías and María Sol.
Lionel Messi reportedly spent time with his father following the World Cup before returning to his club, Inter Miami.
Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys confirmed Jorge’s death in a social media statement, noting that he had been receiving treatment in recent months for an undisclosed illness.
The club described him as a key figure in Lionel Messi’s life and career, saying he was “the pillar and the person who, with vision, rigour and affection, supported the career of the best player of all time,” alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) also expressed its condolences to the Messi family.
“From here, we stand in solidarity with the entire family during this difficult time and send the most heartfelt, warm and affectionate embrace. Strength to you all,” the association said.
Concerns about Jorge Messi’s health had emerged during the World Cup after Lionel Messi became emotional following Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria.
Speaking after the match, Messi said he was going through a difficult personal situation. He later explained that his tears were related to “something unrelated to football” and followed “a few difficult, complicated days.”
His emotional reaction to Argentina’s last-16 victory over Egypt subsequently sparked speculation that his father’s worsening health may have been a factor.
Days later, the Messi family confirmed that Jorge was undergoing medical treatment but provided few details about his condition.
Jorge Messi played a significant role throughout his son’s football career, particularly during Lionel’s formative years and his rise at Barcelona. He served as his representative for several years and remained one of his closest advisers and sources of support.
Reflecting on their relationship in the past, Lionel Messi said he had always valued his father’s opinion.
“I always needed my dad’s approval, ever since I was a kid. After every match, I’d ask him what he thought of how I played,” the football star had said.
Jorge Messi’s death marks a significant personal loss for Lionel Messi, who has frequently credited his father and family for their support throughout his remarkable career.
