The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has confirmed the tragic death of one of its students, Babalola Marvelous Olanrewaju, who was fatally shot during an unofficial sign-out ceremony held at the Ultramodern Wazo Market in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the University’s Registrar, Olayinka O. Balogun, described the incident as a deeply saddening and unfortunate event that occurred on Wednesday, August 6.
“The University is heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our students during a sign-out ceremony at the Ultramodern Wazo Market,” the statement read. “It is important to note that LAUTECH had banned sign-out activities on and around campus since 2023.”
The University also disclosed that hotels in and around Ogbomoso were formally instructed not to permit the use of their facilities for such ceremonies involving LAUTECH students.
“Despite this directive, preliminary investigations indicate that a group of students disregarded the policy and organized a sign-out celebration on the football pitch at the Wazo Market,” the Registrar said.
The event reportedly turned tragic when Babalola was shot at the venue. Witnesses say he managed to leave the area on his motorcycle but later collapsed and was found unresponsive. He was confirmed dead shortly after.
Following a distress call, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs contacted the Oyo State Police Command, which immediately deployed officers to the scene. A search of the deceased’s belongings helped confirm his identity as a 300-level student of Mechanical Engineering.
His body has since been taken to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital morgue.
The University says it is cooperating fully with police investigations and has formally notified the family of the deceased.
“The Management extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. We pray for the repose of his soul and strength for his loved ones during this painful time,” the statement concluded.
