Man Caught with Counterfeit $1,000 Bills in Gombe, Says Police

The Gombe State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man, Usman Kawu, for possession of counterfeit U.S. currency.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, June 2, 2025, by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the suspect was apprehended by officers from the Lawanti Airport Division during a routine surveillance operation.

Kawu, a resident of Kuji Kwadon village in Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area, was found with ten suspected counterfeit $100 bills, equivalent to approximately ₦1.5 million. He also had ₦10,000 in Nigerian currency, all concealed in his inner shorts.

“The suspect attempted to use the fake notes to deceive unsuspecting members of the public,” Abdullahi said. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the counterfeit currency was handed to him by an accomplice, whose identity is being withheld for now.”

Kawu reportedly confessed to the crime and claimed he was instructed to trade the counterfeit dollars.

Efforts are ongoing to track down the accomplice and recover additional evidence. The case is under further investigation.

The police, under the leadership of Commissioner CP Bello Yahaya, reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the financial security of citizens and urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
