On Tuesday, August 12, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu officially launched the pilot phase of the state’s Identifier Project, a digital addressing system aimed at standardizing house numbering and street naming throughout Lagos.
Speaking at the event held in Victoria Island during the Nigeria Land Titling, Registration, and Documentation Programme (NLTRDP), Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the initiative will assign a unique digital identity to every property in Lagos, enhancing navigation, emergency response, and public service delivery.
“This initiative leverages technology to solve longstanding land issues. Once a property has an address, all essential information about it becomes accessible,” he said, commending the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for its efforts to modernize land administration.
The project is set to roll out in Ikeja next week, featuring the use of QR codes and colour-coded identifiers specific to local government areas. These tools will allow residents, officials, and service providers to quickly access property information.
At the same event, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, disclosed that over 97% of land in Nigeria remains untitled, restricting its use as collateral and reducing its market value. He outlined plans to increase land titling to 50% within the next decade through digitized registries, geographic information system (GIS) integration, and adoption of international best practices.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, described the Identifier Project as a significant step towards modernizing Lagos’ infrastructure, with promising benefits for security, revenue generation, and urban management.
