The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted reports claiming that the national grid has collapsed twice since the beginning of the year.

On Wednesday, February 12, some areas of the country experienced power outages following a disturbance in the national grid, sparking speculation of another grid collapse.

However, in a statement released via its official X account on Saturday, February 15, TCN labeled the reports as “mischievous and misleading.”

“It is important to note that the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) is regulated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and governed by industry documents. These documents designate the National Control Centre System Operator, or its backup, the National Supplementary Control Centre (SNCC), as the sole authority for providing public updates on grid events and status,” the statement read in part.

TCN clarified that while there was no grid collapse, a tripping incident occurred on February 12, 2025, affecting power supply in Abuja, Lagos, and Osogbo.

The company explained that the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330 kilovolt (kV) transmission line tripped, and the Benin-Egbin 330kV line was under scheduled maintenance. This caused a cascade effect, leading to outages in certain areas, although other regions remained unaffected.

“Full restoration of bulk power supply to affected areas has since been completed,” TCN concluded.
