Unidentified gunmen, suspected to be cultists, have killed the President-General of Ogidi community and another person in Anambra State.

The President-General of Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area, Sir Ikwuka Okoye, popularly known as Anumili, was shot dead on Friday, February 6.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by members of a rival cult group, allegedly in retaliation for the recent arrest and killing of their leader by local security operatives.

The incident occurred at the School Field in Ogidi, where another man, yet to be identified, was also gunned down during the attack.

A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said gunmen invaded the community on Friday evening and opened fire, killing the community leader and another victim believed to be his relative.

“The daredevil gunmen came into our community last night. By the time they left, the President-General and one other person, who was with him, were lying dead at the School Field,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the killings were allegedly linked to the recent capture and killing of a notorious cultist in the community.

He stated that police operatives immediately took control of the scene and commenced investigations, adding that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible.

“The Anambra State Police Command regrets the murder of the President-General of Ogidi community and one other person. Investigations are ongoing, and all efforts are being intensified to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Ikenga said.
