France winger Michael Olise has made FIFA World Cup history by becoming the first player to register seven assists in a single tournament.
The Bayern Munich playmaker broke the previous record of six assists, set by Brazilian legend Pelé at the 1970 FIFA World Cup. Olise reached the milestone during France’s 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place play-off on Saturday, capping an outstanding individual campaign despite Les Bleus missing out on a top-three finish.
The 23-year-old played a pivotal role in France’s attacking displays throughout the tournament, creating numerous goals for captain Kylian Mbappé and establishing himself as one of the competition’s standout playmakers. A product of Crystal Palace’s academy, Olise showcased exceptional vision, creativity and composure as he helped France reach the semi-finals before their defeat to eventual champions Spain.
Although the 2026 FIFA World Cup featured an expanded 48-team format, allowing teams to play more matches than in previous editions, Olise’s seven assists remain the highest tally recorded by a player in a single World Cup campaign under FIFA’s official statistics.
France concluded their tournament with defeat to England in the third-place play-off, but Olise’s record-breaking achievement stood out as one of the competition’s most remarkable individual performances.
