Spain have been crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after edging defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a dramatic final on Sunday, July 19.
Substitute Ferran Torres proved to be Spain’s match-winner, scoring the only goal in the second half of extra time to secure La Roja’s second World Cup title and end Argentina’s reign as champions.
The tightly contested final remained goalless after 90 minutes, with both sides unable to find a breakthrough during regulation time. Torres eventually broke the deadlock in the 106th minute, finishing off a decisive attack to seal a historic victory for Spain.
Spain controlled much of the encounter and created the better chances throughout the match but were repeatedly frustrated by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who delivered a string of outstanding saves to keep his side in contention. However, the Aston Villa shot-stopper’s heroics were ultimately not enough to prevent Spain from lifting the trophy.
The victory sees Spain claim their second FIFA World Cup crown, while Argentina fall short in their bid to retain the title they won four years earlier.
