The Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure has sentenced two men, Tosin Omoniyi Deji and Ojo Rotimi, to death by hanging for armed robbery.

Delivering the judgment, Justice W. R. Olamide ruled that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, relying on the testimonies of five eyewitnesses who were also direct victims of the crimes.

The offences were committed on June 2 and June 5, 2022, in Alade Idanre, Ondo State.

Justice Olamide noted that the defendants failed to call any witnesses in their defence, and the prosecution’s evidence remained unchallenged and compelling.

In addition to the death sentence for armed robbery, Deji was also convicted of burglary and attempted rape, receiving 14 years’ imprisonment for each of those charges.

His co-defendant, Rotimi, was similarly found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging for armed robbery.

The judge emphasized that the gravity of the crimes and the overwhelming evidence presented justified the sentences handed down.
