Tragedy struck Enugu, the Enugu State capital, on Sunday, September 13, after a four-storey building under construction collapsed, killing one person and leaving several others trapped in the rubble.
The multi-million-naira hotel reportedly collapsed while construction workers were at the site. Four workers were rescued, while the body of one victim was recovered from the debris.
Reports indicate that the workers were sleeping at the construction site when the building suddenly collapsed at about 6 a.m.
It was also learnt that another building previously constructed on the same spot had collapsed, leading to the commencement of a new construction project, which has now suffered a similar fate.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority and the police, were deployed to the scene.
The cause of the collapse has not yet been established, as concerns mount over building safety standards, construction practices and regulatory enforcement in the state.
