Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton has died at the age of 79. She passed away in California on Saturday, October 11.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed they responded to a medical emergency at Keaton’s home at 8:08 a.m. local time and transported a 79-year-old woman to a nearby hospital. Her death was later confirmed.

Keaton rose to prominence in the 1970s with her iconic role in The Godfather trilogy and her frequent collaborations with director Woody Allen, most notably in Annie Hall (1977), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her distinctive style and nuanced performances made her one of the most beloved figures in Hollywood.

Throughout her decades-long career, Keaton starred in a wide range of films, including The First Wives Club, Something’s Gotta Give, Father of the Bride, and the Book Club franchise. She also remained culturally relevant in recent years, appearing in Justin Bieber’s 2021 music video “Ghost.”

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, she was the eldest of four children. Her father was a civil engineer, while her mother, Dorothy, was a homemaker with artistic aspirations. Keaton later took her mother’s maiden name professionally, as “Diane Hall” was already registered with the Actors’ Equity Association.

Keaton often credited her mother as a major influence, telling People magazine in 2004: “Secretly in her heart of hearts, she probably wanted to be an entertainer of some kind. She sang. She played the piano. She was beautiful. She was my advocate.”

Known for her independent spirit, Keaton defied Hollywood norms by never marrying and choosing to adopt her two children, Dexter and Duke, in 1996 and 2001, respectively.

“Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist, it was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time,” she told Ladies’ Home Journal in 2008. “So I plunged in.”

In a 2019 interview with People, she reflected on her path: “I’m the only one in my generation of actresses who has been a single woman all her life. I’m really glad I didn’t get married. I’m an oddball.”

Over the years, Keaton was romantically linked to fellow Hollywood legends including Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty, but chose a life outside the traditional spotlight of marriage and family.

Aside from her work in film, Keaton was a vibrant presence on social media, particularly Instagram, where she shared personal reflections, tributes, and glimpses into her daily life.

She is survived by her two children.
