The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended 10 nationals from the Republic of Benin over involvement in an illegal human trafficking operation within the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Lawal Adebowale, disclosed the arrests on Sunday, August 3, 2025, while addressing journalists in Akure.

The suspects—Atouh Joel, Mohamed Amidou, Saibou Akateliwe, Abdul Jahao, Ndah Severin, Kumpori Ruth, Kumpori Martin, Tatiana Dianne, Martias Sossa, and Ndapola Oba Giov—were arrested on July 31, 2025, at their respective residences along Oda Road, Akure.

“These individuals illegally smuggled themselves into Nigeria from the Republic of Benin,” CP Adebowale said. “Some were found with expired international passports, while others lacked valid travel documents altogether.”

Investigations further revealed that the suspects conspired to unlawfully bring a Congolese man, Nzaou Yelica Christ-Olse (29), into Nigeria without his consent. The victim was lured under the false promise of receiving assistance to start an online business but was subsequently abandoned by the group upon arrival.

The commissioner emphasized that the suspects’ actions violated Nigeria’s immigration and anti-trafficking laws.

“The case has been transferred to the Nigeria Immigration Service and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for further investigation and prosecution,” he added. “The victim is currently safe, in custody, and receiving necessary support.”

CP Adebowale called on residents to provide useful information to aid the police in combating crime across Ondo State.

“We rely on the vigilance and credible information from the good people of Ondo State to maintain safety. The command remains committed to delivering lawful, ethical, and responsive policing to ensure a secure environment for all,” he concluded.
