The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old cleaner, Mohammed Dan-Azumi, for allegedly stealing a 2016 Toyota Corolla Sport worth about ₦18 million belonging to a medical doctor serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 21, the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the suspect was apprehended in Kano State after an intelligence-led operation.
According to the police, the doctor, who is currently undertaking his mandatory one-year NYSC service at a hospital in Adamawa State, had asked Dan-Azumi, a cleaner at the same facility, to wash his vehicle. However, the suspect allegedly drove away with the car instead of returning it.
Nguroje said the victim reported the incident to the police, prompting operatives of the State Intelligence Department (SID) in Yola to launch an investigation.
“The breakthrough followed a report lodged by the owner of the vehicle, who stated that he had entrusted his vehicle to Mohammed Dan-Azumi, 26, of Girei Local Government Area, for washing. The suspect allegedly absconded with the vehicle to an unknown destination.
“Acting swiftly on the report, operatives of the State Intelligence Department (SID), Yola, launched a coordinated, intelligence-led operation that led to the tracking and arrest of the suspect in Kano State. The stolen vehicle was successfully recovered,” the statement read.
The police said investigations are ongoing, adding that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
