The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, over allegations of impersonation, obtaining money by false pretence, and the unlawful use of medical equipment.
Ekpeme was arrested by officers attached to the Uwanse Division in Calabar South following a complaint filed by Mrs. Edemawan Samuel, 45. She alleged that the suspect falsely posed as a medical doctor and collected ₦500,000 from her after promising to secure employment for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly used the false claim to deceive the complainant into parting with the money. Police also recovered exhibits believed to be connected to the case during the investigation.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Eitokpah Akata, said the suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.
According to Akata, the Commissioner of Police has directed a comprehensive investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case and determine whether other people may have fallen victim to the suspect’s alleged activities.
He added that the suspect would be charged to court if sufficient evidence is established at the conclusion of the investigation.
The police spokesperson also assured the public that the command is conducting a discreet investigation to uncover the full extent of the suspect’s operations and identify any possible accomplices or additional victims. He said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
