Police Arrest Notorious Bandit ‘Akki’, Recover Weapons in Zamfara

The Zamfara State Police Command has arrested a notorious bandit, Muhammadu Dan Kani, popularly known as “Akki”, and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition in a series of coordinated operations across the state.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba, disclosed this during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Gusau on Tuesday, September 29, 2025. He credited the success to intensified patrols and credible intelligence gathered by security operatives.

According to CP Maikaba, on September 15, police operatives on routine patrol along the Gummi–Sokoto Road intercepted a Toyota Corolla vehicle concealing arms hidden in a sack of oranges. Items recovered included four AK-47 rifles, 200 rounds of PKT ammunition, 28 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and four empty magazines. The suspect, identified as Nasuru Dawan Jiya, reportedly confessed that he was transporting the weapons to bandits in Gurusu Village.

Two days later, on September 17, the police arrested Muhammadu Dan Kani, alias “Akki,” a notorious bandit from Funtua, Katsina State. The arrest led to the recovery of 11 fabricated firearms, 25 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and six live cartridges.

In a related development, on September 19, along the Gusau–Sokoto Highway near Gada Biyu, police operatives apprehended two suspects riding motorcycles and found them in possession of 18 fabricated guns.

The crackdown also extended to narcotics: on September 14, a known drug dealer, Alhaji Shehu Aliyu, was arrested in Gurusu Village with nine sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The police command further reported the successful rescue of five kidnapped victims on September 21 during a joint operation involving police officers, Community Protection Guards, and local vigilantes in Talata Mafara. The victims were freed after a gun battle with their abductors.

Commending his officers for their professionalism and bravery, CP Maikaba reaffirmed the command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks operating within Zamfara State.

He urged residents to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by providing timely and credible information, stressing that community cooperation remains vital in the fight against crime.
