The Ondo State Police Command has rescued a kidnap victim, Ogunniyi Semiu, and arrested 12 suspects linked to various crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, stealing, and cultism.
Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, disclosed this during a press briefing on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the command headquarters in Akure. He credited the breakthrough to the command’s intelligence-led operations.
According to Afolabi, a combined team of police operatives and local hunters carried out a tactical operation early Saturday that led to the rescue of Semiu, who was abducted on May 14 around the Ikare Mine in Akoko North-East LGA. The kidnappers had demanded a ₦14 million ransom for his release.
Acting on credible intelligence, the joint team ambushed the suspects near Supare Mine, a known criminal hideout. The suspects opened fire on the operatives, resulting in a gun battle. Several suspects were injured, and one — Babuga Muhammed of Iseyin, Oyo State — was arrested at the scene.
“Crucially, the victim was rescued alive and unhurt. No ransom was paid,” CP Afolabi confirmed.
Muhammed, who sustained gunshot wounds, is receiving treatment at the State Specialist Hospital. The police say efforts are underway to apprehend other fleeing suspects believed to be injured.
Other arrested suspects include Ibrahim Uma, Paul Osanyinduro, Abubakar Bamoh, Olaoluwa Olootu, Aliu Raymond, Yahaya, Hasminu Jibirimi, Hammed Olabode, and Adegoke Olayemi. Some have reportedly confessed to various crimes.
The police commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
“We remain committed to protecting lives and property with professionalism and integrity. Together, we can build a safer Ondo State,” Afolabi assured.
