Police Halt Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement Following Court Order

The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the enforcement of its tinted glass permit policy after a court order, just days before the directive was set to take effect nationwide.

The enforcement was scheduled to begin on January 2, 2026. However, police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin announced on Thursday, January 1, that implementation has been placed on hold pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit or until the court order is set aside.

The suspension follows an ex parte injunction granted in December 2025 by a Delta State High Court, which barred the police from enforcing the policy across the country. The suit was filed by a private citizen against the Inspector General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Delta State Commissioner of Police.

The issue has generated public controversy between the police and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). After the police signaled plans to resume enforcement in 2026, citing an increase in vehicle-related crimes, the NBA accused the force of disobeying a valid court order, describing the move as executive recklessness and a breach of the rule of law and due process.

In response, the police had previously argued that no court order had declared the policy unlawful or permanently restrained its enforcement as part of their statutory responsibilities.

Providing an update, Hundeyin confirmed that the police have now been formally served with the interim injunction. He said the force has entered an appearance, filed preliminary objections, and applied for the injunction to be vacated. The case has been adjourned until January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.

Hundeyin stated that the suspension of enforcement is in full compliance with the court order. He added that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the force’s commitment to the rule of law while fulfilling its duty to protect lives and property.

The police, he said, will continue to deploy lawful and intelligence-driven strategies to address security concerns and maintain public safety nationwide as the legal process continues.
