The Taraba State Police Command has successfully thwarted a kidnap attempt, rescuing 17 passengers traveling along the Wukari highway.

James Lashan Saminu, the police spokesperson, announced the development in a statement to journalists in Taraba on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. on July 12, when suspected armed kidnappers intercepted a white Toyota bus owned by People’s Choice Company, with registration number 26G-17TR.

The bus, carrying passengers from Enugu to Yola in Adamawa State, was attacked near the Federal University Wukari, according to police reports.

“After receiving a distress call, the Divisional Police Officer of Wukari Division, Anthony Jerry, promptly mobilized a team of officers and coordinated with nearby military personnel. The combined security forces advanced to the scene, causing the kidnappers to flee into the surrounding bushes,” the statement said.

One passenger, 22-year-old Sadiq Usman of Chamba ethnicity, was initially reported missing but was later found unharmed after a search operation. All other passengers were safely rescued.

Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Bretet Simon commended the officers for their swift response and reaffirmed the command’s dedication to fighting kidnapping in partnership with other security agencies.

He also urged the public to continue supporting security efforts by promptly reporting any suspicious activities.
