The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for suspects after a deadly attack at a burial ceremony in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, left at least four people dead and about 15 others injured.

The attack took place late Thursday during the funeral rites of an 18-year-old boy in Ezi Village. According to eyewitnesses, the assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire on mourners, triggering chaos as people fled in different directions.

“They came suddenly and started shooting at everyone,” one witness recounted. The attackers reportedly escaped immediately after the assault.

Sources within the community suggested the incident may have been linked to a cult rivalry, with some describing it as a possible revenge attack. “Friends of the deceased had gathered for a wake, and while some were entertaining themselves, the gunmen struck. Many were shot, and several bodies were later taken to the morgue,” one source said. While locals claimed the death toll was higher, police have officially confirmed four fatalities.

Police spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga said an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible. Preliminary findings suggest the attack was the result of a clash between rival cult groups.

Ikenga assured the public that the police are working to restore calm in the area and urged residents to share any information that could aid the ongoing investigation.
