President Bola Tinubu has appointed Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Initiative.
The appointment was announced on Friday evening through a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy. This marks a renewed commitment by the administration to tackle the persistent challenges in Nigeria’s livestock sector.
Before this new role, Jega had served as the co-chairman of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee.
In 2023, Tinubu underscored his administration’s goal of transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector into a commercial industry. He expressed concern over the long-standing neglect of livestock farming at the commercial level, stressing that Nigeria could have reaped significant benefits if the sector had been adequately developed.
Last year, the president also approved the formation of a livestock committee to address herders-farmers conflicts and strengthen both the livestock and dairy industries. This committee was established following a report from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria.
