Two members of a vigilante group have been apprehended by the police on charges of allegedly torturing a man to death in Abia.

The Abia State Police Command has apprehended two members of the Mbutu/Umuojima Vigilante in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government area. The suspects, identified as Onyebuchi Ukandu, a vigilante commander, and Emmanuel Onyebuenyi, were arrested for their alleged involvement in torturing a man to death.

Confirming the arrest, the police spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka, released a statement on Friday, December 22, 2023. The victim, Alex Ukaegbu, who oversaw a building site in Osisioma, was reportedly apprehended by the vigilante members for being in possession of iron rods.

According to the statement, the suspects chained the victim and demanded a sum of money for his release. Unfortunately, Alex Ukaegbu passed away while still in their custody. The incident was reported to the Osisioma Division, prompting an investigation by police operatives.

The lifeless body of Alex Ukaegbu was subsequently deposited at Alanwemadu Mortuary Osisioma for preservation. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry.
