Two teenage brothers, Miracle Peters (16) and Emma Peters (17), tragically drowned in floodwaters following heavy rains in the Eligbolo community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 12, 2025, as the boys were trying to assist a person trapped by the flood. While they successfully helped the individual to safety, disaster struck on their return journey when Emma’s footwear slipped off in the strong current. As they attempted to retrieve it, the floodwaters swept both brothers away.
Their mother, Onyinyechi Peters, recounted the heartbreaking event to reporters in Port Harcourt on Monday. She explained that she returned home to find the boys missing and was informed by a neighbor that they had gone to help someone in danger.
“She told me someone had called for their help, and on their way, the neighbor accompanied them to assist the person crossing into their home,” Onyinyechi said.
She described how the boys’ slippers slipped off during their return:
“People were telling them to leave the slippers, but they insisted on retrieving them. Then the water carried both of them away.”
A third boy who was with Miracle and Emma managed to return and inform his mother about what happened. Onyinyechi said she initially saw the boys playing in the floodwaters but did not realize the danger until it was too late.
“Before the water swept them away, they were shouting for help. One man said he heard the cries from his room but couldn’t come out to assist,” she added tearfully.
Since that day, the brothers have not been found.
