The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert advising American citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to military and government facilities in Abuja due to heightened global security concerns.

In a statement released on Monday, June 23, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja announced that all embassy personnel and their family members are prohibited from visiting Nigerian military sites or government venues in the capital unless for official business.

The advisory follows unspecified international developments that have triggered increased security measures and caution around sensitive locations.

U.S. citizens living in or visiting Nigeria are urged to remain vigilant, particularly in public areas frequented by Western nationals, expatriates, and government officials. The embassy also encouraged avoiding large gatherings, limiting unnecessary travel, and steering clear of predictable routines. Additionally, individuals are advised to familiarize themselves with emergency exits in buildings and regularly review their personal security plans.

Part of the embassy’s statement reads:
“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, U.S. Mission Nigeria informs U.S. citizens that all U.S. Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time.

Recommended Actions:

  • Stay alert in public places, especially where Westerners, expatriates, and government officials gather

  • Avoid large crowds and limit unnecessary travel

  • Maintain unpredictable routines

  • Know the nearest emergency exits when entering buildings

  • Review personal security measures regularly

Despite the new security measures, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open and fully operational.
