The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to restore petroleum subsidy if elected, saying his administration would first tackle corruption across the country. Obi made the promise on Monday at a town hall meeting in Sokoto State organised for the joint Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections. The former Anambra State governor identified systemic corruption as one of Nigeria’s major economic challenges and vowed to tackle graft across all sectors of government if elected. “People are talking about subsidy, but what it is all about is corruption. By removing the corruption, I assure you that we will bring back subsidy. “The problem of Nigeria is corruption. As such, if elected, we will stop all forms of corruption in every sector of the country,” Obi said. He urged Nigerians to support NDC candidates contesting various elective positions in 2027, describing national transformation as a collective civic responsibility. Obi also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a governance model centred on “care and service to Nigerians.” Expressing concern over the economic hardship facing citizens, he pledged to redirect government resources towards strengthening national security, improving education and expanding critical infrastructure. “Education is our number one priority after unity and security,” Obi added. He further promised to link all state capitals across Nigeria through an integrated railway network, saying the project would boost trade and promote greater economic integration among regions.
