2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Osimhen Faked Injury Against Rwanda – Asamoah Gyan Alleges

Former Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan has alleged that Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen faked his injury during a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in order to protect himself ahead of Galatasaray’s UEFA Champions League campaign.

Osimhen limped off midway through the first half of Nigeria’s 1-0 victory at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, following a challenge with Rwanda’s Niyomugabo. The incident ruled him out of the Super Eagles’ subsequent 1-1 draw against South Africa in Bloemfontein.

However, in an interview with Habersarikirmizi, Gyan questioned the authenticity of Osimhen’s injury, suggesting it was a calculated move.

“I know these tricks,” Gyan said. “Someone probably told Osimhen, ‘Look, we’ve invested heavily in you. The Champions League is coming. We don’t want you going to Africa, but if you must, just play a little, then go down and pretend it’s serious. By the next day, you’ll be back in Türkiye.’”

Gyan’s remarks have stirred debate among fans and analysts, with many questioning the commitment of top African players to national duty when club interests are at stake.
