In a ruling on a lawsuit initiated by his wife and mother of his three children, Henry Edet Unung, a resident of Akwa Ibom, has been sentenced to one month in prison by an Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo for neglecting his children.
Presiding over the case, Justice Ntong Ntong directed the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police to apprehend and detain Unung for one month at the Uyo Correctional Centre due to his failure to fulfill his parental responsibilities.
Justice Ntong further highlighted that Unung deliberately disregarded a previous court order issued by Justice Iboro Ukpanah on November 9, 2018, which mandated him to provide a monthly allowance of N20,000 along with essential food items for his children’s welfare.
The judge remarked, “The Court made an order that the respondent should pay N20,000 monthly as maintenance allowance, including a bag of rice, beans, garri, and other food items for his own children, in addition to payment of their school fees, medical needs, clothing, and other necessities. You bluntly refused to abide by the Court order, which amounts to contemptuous and a wanton disrespect and affront to the majesty of the Court.”
