Police operatives from the Ogui Police Division in Enugu State Command have apprehended a suspected fraudster identified as Nnamani Joseph, aged 45. Nnamani allegedly devised a scheme to defraud a businessman of eighteen bags of rice valued at about four hundred thousand Naira (N400,000.00), under the pretext of purchasing the rice for charity at a church.

According to a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, on February 14, 2024, which happened to be Valentine’s Day, Nnamani visited the premises of a church in Ogui, Enugu. From there, he placed a call to the businessman, requesting eighteen 25 kg bags of rice, claiming that he intended to use them for charity at the church.

The businessman, unaware of Nnamani’s ulterior motives, supplied the rice and accompanied him to the bank to receive payment through a bank transfer. However, while the payment process was underway, Nnamani discreetly absconded from the bank, returned to the church, and absconded with the bags of rice to an undisclosed location.

Upon receiving the report, police operatives launched an intelligence-driven investigation, leading to Nnamani’s arrest on February 20, 2024, at Enene, Enugu. Eight out of the eighteen bags of rice were recovered from him, as he had re-bagged and sold the remaining bags at Oye Enene Market, Enugu.

Ndukwe further stated that once investigations are concluded, the suspect and his accomplices will face legal proceedings in court.
