The Sultan of Sokoto and President of the National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially announced the sighting of the moon, marking the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan 1445AH.
According to a post shared by the National Moonsighting Committee Nigeria on Sunday, March 10, the Sultan has urged Muslims nationwide to begin fasting on Monday, March 11, 2024. The crescent indicating the start of Ramadan was earlier sighted in Saudi Arabia on the same day.
The sighting of the moon on Sunday evening signifies the conclusion of Sha’aban, the eighth month of the Hijri Calendar, and the start of Ramadan, which aligns with Monday, March 11.
- Ramadan follows the Lunar Islamic calendar, with months spanning either 29 or 30 days, beginning and ending based on moon sightings. During this sacred month, Muslims worldwide fast from dawn to sunset as part of their religious observance.
