The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Bright Ngene of the Labour Party (LP) the winner of the rerun election held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, for the Enugu South 1 State Constituency.

Ngene, a legal practitioner, is currently serving a jail term at Enugu Prison. He was sentenced by an Enugu South Magistrates Court, presided over by E.D. Onwu, following a 2017 arraignment alongside two others by the Enugu State Police Command over a ₦15 million community development fund case. Despite his incarceration, Ngene was still nominated by the Labour Party to contest in the rerun election.

Samuel Olumeku, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, officially declared Ngene the winner.

“Two rerun elections, ordered by the Election Petition Appeal Tribunals, were held in Enugu and Kano States. After previous disruptions caused by violence and thuggery, the elections have now been concluded, with declarations made by the Returning Officers. For Enugu South 1 State Constituency, Ngene Bright Emeka of the Labour Party was declared the winner,” Olumeku said.

INEC’s Enugu spokesman and voter education officer, Rex Achumie, confirmed Ngene’s victory to LEADERSHIP in Enugu.
