Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will no longer receive Secret Service protection after President Donald Trump rescinded an extension that had been granted by former President Joe Biden, according to a letter obtained by CNN.
The memorandum, titled “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security” and dated Thursday, states:
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
By law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office—a period that ended for Harris on July 21, 2025. However, Biden had extended her coverage for an additional year via a directive that had not been publicly disclosed.
With the revocation, Harris will lose not only the agents who provided in-person security but also access to continuous threat intelligence, including monitoring of emails, texts, social media, and situational analyses. Her residence in Los Angeles will also no longer receive federal protection.
Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris, expressed gratitude for the Secret Service, stating, “The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”
Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, had already lost his personal detail on July 21, as is standard for former vice presidents’ spouses.
California Governor Gavin Newsom was informed of the change late Thursday. His spokesperson, Bob Salladay, condemned the decision, saying, “The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also criticized the move, calling it “another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearances and more. This puts the former Vice President in danger, and I look forward to working with the Governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles.”
Neither the White House nor the Secret Service responded immediately to CNN’s requests for comment. Trump’s decision comes as Harris prepares for a multi-city book tour promoting her memoir 107 Days—her first major public engagement since leaving office. The move also raises questions about the potential costs and logistics of arranging comparable private security, which could run into millions of dollars annually.
