Jose Mourinho Admits Fenerbahce Move Was a Mistake as He Takes Charge at Benfica

Jose Mourinho has acknowledged that his decision to join Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce was a mistake, following a brief and ultimately unsuccessful stint in Istanbul.

The 62-year-old manager was dismissed by Fenerbahce last month after the club failed to secure Champions League qualification. His departure immediately sparked speculation about his next destination, and earlier this week, he was strongly linked with a return to Portugal with Benfica. That speculation was confirmed on Thursday, when Benfica officially announced Mourinho’s appointment in a filing to the country’s Securities Market Commission. He has signed a contract through to the end of the 2026–27 season.

Speaking at his unveiling press conference, Mourinho reflected candidly on his time in Turkey and outlined his ambitions for his new role.

“My career has been rich—I’ve coached in many different countries,” he said. “I made the wrong choice, but I don’t have regrets. Going to Fenerbahce was a mistake, but I gave everything until the last day. Coaching Benfica feels like returning to my level.”

Looking ahead, Mourinho expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to compete for major honours.

“Promises are only worth so much. When I was at FC Porto, I made promises I could have broken—but I didn’t. Now, I truly believe Benfica has everything needed to win the championship. Yes, points have been dropped, and we may drop more, but we’re starting fresh.”

He added, “This team has what it takes to be champions. It’s not just a promise—it’s my conviction. For me, coaching Benfica means being at one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
