The Senate on Tuesday commenced an emergency plenary session to deliberate on the controversial amendments to the Electoral Act.

The emergency sitting was convened amid growing protests by Nigerians and civil society groups calling for the inclusion of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results.

The session comes less than a week after the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026.

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, is presiding over the plenary, which is being attended by the remaining senators.
