The Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has secured the conviction of a 20-year-old suspect, Muhammad Maharazu, over drug-related offences and an attempted attack on operatives.
Maharazu was sentenced to 15 years in prison by Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Kano on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, following his prosecution by the agency. The court ruled that the sentence takes immediate effect, with no option of a fine.
According to a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the suspect was arrested on February 14, 2026, during an operation at Filin Idi, an area identified as a major drug hotspot in Kano.
He was reportedly found with various illegal substances, including Diazepam tablets. During the operation, Maharazu allegedly attempted to resist arrest by brandishing a long knife and attacking officers. He was, however, subdued and taken into custody before being charged to court.
Reacting to the verdict, the Commander of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, DY Lawal, praised the Federal High Court for what he described as a firm and decisive judgment.
He stated that the ruling sends a strong warning that threats or acts of violence will not deter NDLEA operatives from carrying out their duties.
