Police in Anambra State have arrested a man, Eric Nwombu, over alleged impersonation and unlawful possession of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination materials.
In a statement issued on Saturday, April 18, the command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect was apprehended on Tuesday, April 14, in Atani by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police’s Safe School Initiative.
According to Ikenga, Nwombu was arrested after reports that he had collected 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) slips from candidates at a cybercafé.
Items recovered from him include eight UTME slips and an exercise book containing names and examination numbers of students, which he could not satisfactorily explain.
The spokesperson added that the suspect allegedly posed as a coordinator for the 2026 UTME in Atani when questioned by staff at the computer centre. His explanation reportedly raised suspicion, prompting the workers to alert nearby police operatives.
“On sighting the operatives, the suspect attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended,” the statement said.
Ikenga noted that preliminary investigations are ongoing and that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for further inquiry.
He also said the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting the integrity of public examinations, while urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
