British Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, June 22, in a statement delivered outside 10 Downing Street, bringing his tenure as prime minister to an unexpected close.

The announcement comes less than two years after Starmer led the Labour Party to a commanding victory in the July 2024 general election, ending more than a decade of Conservative rule and returning Labour to government.

In his farewell remarks, Starmer defended his record in office, saying every decision he made was guided by the national interest.

“Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first,” he said.

He pointed to his efforts to rebuild the Labour Party, describing the organisation he inherited as “politically, financially and morally bankrupt.” Starmer also highlighted his campaign against anti-Semitism within the party and his work to restore public trust in Labour’s economic and national security policies.

His departure has sparked intense speculation over who will succeed him, with attention focusing on Andy Burnham following his recent Makerfield by-election victory.

Party insiders believe Burnham has emerged as the leading contender for the leadership, with discussions reportedly underway about a possible uncontested transition that could see a new prime minister installed before Labour’s annual conference in September.
