Togo removes visa requirement for African nationals

Togo has introduced a visa-free entry policy for citizens of all African countries travelling to the nation for short visits of up to 30 days.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 19, in a statement released by the Togo Ministry of Security via its official X account.

According to the ministry, the initiative is aimed at boosting African integration, facilitating easier movement across the continent and strengthening cooperation among African nations. Under the new policy, African citizens with valid national passports can now enter Togo without a visa for stays not exceeding 30 days.

Describing the decision as a major milestone, the ministry said the reform demonstrates Togo’s commitment to deeper regional integration and continental unity. It also noted that the policy aligns with the government’s vision of making the country a centre for openness, mobility, opportunity and collaboration in Africa.

Despite the visa waiver, travellers will still be required to submit a travel declaration through the government’s official online portal at least 24 hours before arrival in order to receive a travel slip.

Authorities said the move reflects Togo’s determination to strengthen ties among African nations and encourage freer movement within the continent.

The development comes after Rwanda implemented a similar visa-free policy for African travellers. In return, Nigeria recently introduced a 30-day visa exemption for Rwandan citizens visiting the country.
