Former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has welcomed the prospect of Zinedine Zidane becoming the next France manager, describing the former Real Madrid coach as a football legend and someone he regards as an older brother.
Speaking in an interview with Konbini, Benzema was asked about the possibility of Zidane succeeding Didier Deschamps as head coach of the French national team.
Although he said he could not confirm whether Zidane would get the job, Benzema made it clear he would be delighted if the appointment goes through.
“Am I pleased that Zidane is the new coach of France? I cannot say for certain if it will be him, but if it is, yes, I am truly happy. He is a legend; he is like a big brother to me,” Benzema said.
France are yet to officially name a new manager following Deschamps’ departure after 14 years in charge. However, Zidane has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the national team.
During his spell as France boss, Deschamps guided the team to major success, including winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He finished his tenure with 122 wins, 32 draws and 33 defeats in 187 matches.
Zidane, meanwhile, enjoyed a highly successful managerial career at Real Madrid, winning three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles and two La Liga crowns across two spells between 2016 and 2021.
If appointed, the former France captain will be expected to build on Deschamps’ achievements and lead Les Bleus to further international success.
